Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect in the playgroups?

Jardín Family Playgroups are a collaboration between Project Commotion and Linguistic Connection meaning that you can expect a lot of playing, moving your body, and developing strong relationships and communication skills with your child(ren). Jardín is a non judgemental space that welcomes families of all backgrounds and lived experiences. Through prioritizing relationships with one another we will form connections that allow us to grow, learn, and play in community.

Playgroups will be a combination of facilitated playtime caregiver education, and community building between families. Activities may include: guided movement for caregivers and children, learning a song that supports children’s communication skills, talking with Jardín staff about what you notice in your child, and group conversations about promoting happy, healthy development in your family!

Caregivers will also receive take-home activities and resources to use outside of playgroup time. Additionally, each family will receive 2 individual zoom consultations with Jardín staff to discuss their child more in depth and receive individualized activity and strategy ideas to use at home.

Overall, playgroups will be fun sessions where you will connect with your child(ren), caregivers in your community, and staff!

Where do playgroups take place?

Playgroups will take place at Project Commotion’s movement studio at 2095 Harrison St on the corner of 17th and Harrison in the Mission.

Virtual sessions will take place on Zoom. Links will be sent to families after enrollment is confirmed.

What is the age range for the playgroups?

Playgroups are for children birth to 3 years old (newborn to 36 months). We are able to accept some 4 or 5 year olds on a case-by-case basis.

How much do they cost?

Jardín Family Playgroups are a FREE program!

Can I enroll more than one child?

Yes, if you are a caretaker to more than one child in the 0 - 3 age range you can enroll multiple children in the program.

What is an Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ)?

The Ages and Stages Questionnaire (often called the ASQ) is a widely used and trusted screening tool that asks questions about children’s development. It is used to give caregivers, medical professionals, teachers, and other support providers insight into children’s developmental stage and abilities. It is also used to accurately identify children who may be at risk for developmental delays.

The  ASQ is a trusted and valuable tool that can help parents, caregivers, and providers more deeply understand each child and support them in reaching the next stage in their development.

Why do I need an ASQ to participate?

Jardín Family Playgroups are part of  the Early Intervention Support Services Initiative, funded by the San Francisco Department of Early Childhood (DEC).

DEC requires all children to have a recently completed ASQ so that we ensure the population of children being monitored for developmental delays and disabilities is being served in our program. Children’s ASQ results will determine children’s eligibility for the program as families with children in the monitoring zone will be prioritized for registration.

Completing an ASQ will support our staff in understanding the types of support your child(ren) need and allow us to offer that support in an accessible format.

Is a result in the monitoring zone required? Are students in the referral zone eligible to participate?

Our funding requires that the groups are for children who are in the monitoring zone in at least one of the 4 ASQ categories.
Children may enroll if they are in one or more monitoring zones even if they are on track in other categories.

What is the playgroup schedule?

Playgroups meet once a week for 90 minutes with an additional, optional, 45-minute virtual session each week. Playgroups meet for 10 weeks.

Winter schedule:
- Wednesdays 3:30 - 5pm (at Project Commotion)
OR
- Saturdays 9 - 10:30am (at Project Commotion)

AND

Tuesdays 6 - 6:45pm (virtual)

Does the same person have to attend with my child each session?

No, we encourage and welcome multiple or different caretakers to join playgroup sessions. We know that family structures are different in each family and that schedules may not always allow the same person to attend with the child. It takes a village to raise our children and we welcome that village at Jardín.

How do I enroll? What is the enrollment process?

The enrollment steps are as follows:

  1. Fill out an enrollment form at the top of this page

  2. A staff member will reach out to you to confirm your enrollment and schedule an intake session.

  3. Attend your intake meeting. All families will have an intake meeting with staff to learn more about you, your family, your child, and how we can best support you during playgroups. Intakes are more detailed conversations than the ASQ and allow staff to further individualize support for you and your child during playgroups.

  4. Attend your first session at the start of the cohort!

If my child has a referral in progress with GGRC or SFUSD and are still awaiting evaluation or therapy, are they eligible for Jardín Family Playgroups as they await services?

If your child is not receiving services, they may join Jardín for one cohort cycle, but once they begin formal services, they cannot re-enroll.

If my child is enrolled in Jardín Family Playgroups and start receiving individual therapy or intervention services with GGRC or another provider, can they remain in their current cohort?

Yes, children may remain in their cohort even if they start services while playgroups are ongoing. Once children have started in formal services, they cannot re-enroll.
